Indians worked with AI in Amazon stores with Just Walk Out

Amazon is discontinuing Just Walk Out as it revamps its retail network. Artificial intelligence-based technology was introduced into Fresh stores in 2016. Its main goal was to facilitate the shopping process through cameras and sensors that synchronized with the buyer's Amazon account upon entry and tracked the selected items, providing automatic payment upon exit.

However, Just Walk Out did not live up to expectations and required oversight from Amazon employees. Customers have consistently reported problems with AI calculations and delays in issuing checks.

Even though Amazon advertised Fresh as stores without salespeople, the AI ended up being controlled by Indians. About a thousand employees manually tagged videos to train the model and monitored the actions of customers in real time, checking that the items taken corresponded to those indicated on the receipt generated by the AI.

Now Amazon plans to introduce an updated system in its stores that will use Dash smart carts. They have the function of scanning goods during the shopping process and allow you to control expenses using the built-in display.
