LG forced Microsoft Copilot onto TVs, and it can't be removed.

LG Electronics has faced widespread criticism from owners of webOS smart TVs. The issue stems from an automatic software update that forcibly installed the Microsoft Copilot AI assistant app without user consent. This app cannot be removed using standard tools.

The incident gained widespread attention after a lively discussion on Reddit. Numerous users confirmed they encountered the same problem after silently installing the update. They view this as an imposition of unwanted software and a restriction of their control over the device.

Technically, the app was added via a standard firmware update, which, according to LG policy, may include new features and advertising elements. However, in this case, the process occurred without explicit user confirmation, and Copilot was integrated as a system component.

Users have raised privacy concerns. There are suspicions that the assistant could analyze screen content or voice commands to collect data potentially used to train Microsoft's AI models. These concerns are heightened by LG's existing practice of collecting browsing data for targeted advertising.

Experts note that the Copilot integration is part of a strategic alliance between LG and Microsoft aimed at strengthening their position in a competitive market where other manufacturers are also actively implementing AI features. However, the current situation poses reputational risks for the companies. Some users are already considering switching to other brands or using external media players.
