Chinese Robotic Firefighting Dogs

Chinese robotics manufacturer Unitree has unveiled a specialized version of its B2 robot dog designed to fight fires. The robot has a body resistant to extreme temperatures, a powerful water pump, and more.

The new modification is equipped with a powerful water pump capable of delivering a jet of water up to 60 meters away at a flow rate of 40 liters per second. To assess the situation and transmit data to the operator, the device carries a module with a camera that provides a live video broadcast to the emergency services console. The platform can also be equipped with various additional systems, including LiDAR sensors, communication equipment, or a robotic arm. The hose for supplying fire extinguishing agent is fixed to the rear of the robot body, and the working tip of the water gun can be tilted up to 85 degrees for more precise direction of the jet. Both water and foam can be used as a fire extinguishing agent. The robot can automatically disconnect the hose to quickly start performing other tasks. To protect the device itself from overheating in high temperatures, a cooling system with built-in sprinklers is provided. The body is made of composite metal materials, which provides increased strength, as well as protection from moisture and dust. Among the optional equipment, a modular blower unit is mentioned, designed to safely fight forest fires by creating a gap between the flame and combustible materials. Unitree reports a 170% improvement in the performance of the robot's joints compared to the standard B2 model. This allows the machine to move along stairs with an inclination of up to 45 degrees and overcome obstacles up to 40 centimeters high. The power system supports hot-swapping of the battery, which ensures long-term autonomous operation in the field without compromising the waterproofness of the body. Recently, several improved Unitree B2 robots officially joined the staff of the fire and rescue departments of the city of Qingdao in China and are ready for use in real emergency situations.
