Smart Engines Patents AI to Combat Fake Documents in the US
The US Patent and Trademark Office has registered a development by the Russian company Smart Engines — a technology based on artificial intelligence for identifying counterfeit documents with holograms. This is the 13th US patent received by the Russian developer.

The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Smart Engines a patent for a unique technology for verifying the authenticity of documents with holograms. The innovative AI-based solution is capable of analyzing complex holographic patterns that are randomly located on documents such as Canadian and British driver's licenses or Russian passports. Moreover, the technology works even on a regular smartphone, performing verification in real time.
The system creates an ultra-precise map of security elements, identifying counterfeits of any level - from the absence of holograms to their imitation in graphic editors. This is especially relevant in the context of growing fraud: in 2024 alone, a record 27.5 billion rubles were stolen in Russia, and the number of criminal cases on document forgery since 2019 has exceeded 68 thousand.
The technology is part of the Sherlock neural network complex, which conducts 533 checks on 13 groups of parameters, including protection against deepfakes. It is already used by banks, notaries and telecom operators. For example, in 2024, the Zaimer service used it to prevent 10 thousand attempts to apply for a loan using other people's passports. The technology was successfully tested on the MIDV-Holo dataset, containing 700 videos with real and fake documents.
Smart Engines CEO Vladimir Arlazarov emphasizes that the main task was to teach AI to find holograms in arbitrary areas of a document without large computational costs.
"While searching for security elements in pre-set zones (like in a foreign passport) is a common practice, detecting them in arbitrary areas requires a different approach. At the same time, we managed to achieve high efficiency without excessive computational costs - the system works even on a mid-range smartphone."

The company continues to expand its patent portfolio: in 2024, it received 18 Russian and 5 American patents, and the total number of its patents in the field of AI in the US reached 13.
