Samsung patents a “smart” face mask

Samsung, a leading player in the semiconductor industry, has filed a patent for an innovative face mask. Described by the company as an “electronic mask,” the product includes built-in air purifying microchips and has the ability to sync with a mobile device via an app.

The development is equipped with a filter and a sensor that monitors the effectiveness of air purification and informs the user about the need to replace the filter. In addition, the smart mask is capable of tracking and recording the user’s breathing cycles over a certain period of time.

The device contains a small board that provides four different functions: a filter control sensor, a processor, a wireless chip and a fan. The mask is known to be battery-powered, although details about its capacity or battery life have not been revealed.

The sensor interacts with the fan, adjusting its speed depending on the condition of the filter. If the filter is clean, the fan runs at a lower speed, which helps save battery power.

The patent application was filed by Samsung in July 2023, but was only recently published on the patent office website. The question of whether  the product will be introduced to the market remains open. It is worth noting that Razer has already released a similar product - a transparent RGB mask in 2021.
