Apple launches Digital ID
Apple announced the launch of its new Digital ID feature. This is a digital identity that can be created and used in the Apple Wallet app.
Users can create such an ID using their US passport information. It can then be presented using an iPhone or Apple Watch. The company emphasizes that this process ensures a high level of security and privacy.
Initially, the feature will be available in beta mode. Digital ID will be available for security checkpoints at over 250 US airports and TSA checkpoints. This feature applies only to domestic flights. The plan is to expand the scope of digital ID use in the future.
Digital ID does not replace a physical passport. It cannot be used for international travel or border crossings. This new feature is designed to allow more people, including those who don't have a REAL ID driver's license, to obtain a convenient digital ID.
Apple previously introduced the ability to add driver's licenses and state ID cards to Wallet. Those who don't have a US passport can still use this option. The launch of Digital ID expands users' options for storing and accessing personal data on their devices.
