OpenAI Says It Willing to Buy Chrome If Court Orders Google to Sell Browser
ChatGPT CEO Nick Turley told Bloomberg that OpenAI is ready to buy the Chrome browser if the court forces Google to sell the asset. The company believes that this will speed up the integration of AI technologies into web services.

OpenAI is exploring the possibility of acquiring the Chrome browser if a court forces Google to sell it in an antitrust case, ChatGPT CEO Nick Turley told Bloomberg. Owning the browser would allow OpenAI to create a more user-friendly interface and expand user access to AI technologies, he said. ChatGPT is currently available as a Chrome extension, but the company faces challenges, especially on Android devices.
The US Justice Department is demanding that Google not only sell Chrome, but also cancel exclusive contracts and hand over some data to competitors. A decision in the case is expected by August and could lead to large-scale changes in the market comparable to the breakup of AT&T in the 1980s.
Earlier, on April 18, Judge Leonie Brinkema found Google guilty of monopolizing the ad server market. The company was accused of intentionally suppressing competition. In October 2024, the Justice Department began considering measures to limit Google's influence, including a possible business breakup to deprive the corporation of advantages in search and AI technologies.
OpenAI sees the potential deal as a way to strengthen its position, with Turley confident that integrating Chrome with the company's products will open up "tremendous opportunities" for the development of AI services.
