OpenAI is implementing an age-detection system in ChatGPT.
OpenAI has implemented a user age detection system in ChatGPT. The algorithm evaluates behavioral signals, including activity time and patterns, account age, and registration information. Based on this analysis, the system determines whether a user is a minor.
If an account is classified as belonging to a person under 18, ChatGPT automatically activates enhanced security filters. These filters restrict access to content containing graphic violence, romantic and erotic role-playing, descriptions of self-harm, dangerous viral challenges, as well as materials promoting unhealthy beauty standards, extreme diets, and body shaming.
The system operates on the principle of "if in doubt, access is restricted." If there is insufficient data or age uncertainty, the teen mode is applied by default. Adult users who are mistakenly restricted can undergo verification via a selfie in the Persona service, which, according to OpenAI, will take minimal time.
The launch of this system is a preparatory step for the introduction of ChatGPT's "adult mode," which was announced during the GPT-5.2 presentation. This mode, scheduled for launch in the first quarter of 2026, will lift some content restrictions for verified adult users.
The system will be rolled out in the European Union in the coming weeks, taking into account local regulatory requirements. OpenAI notes that the algorithm will be continually refined as data is collected.
