Musk launches his own AI chip production
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, announced the imminent launch of the Terafab project, which aims to create in-house semiconductor manufacturing facilities. The project is scheduled to launch on March 21, 2026, but details of the initiative have not yet been disclosed.
The project is an initiative to create in-house semiconductor manufacturing facilities. Musk spoke of the need for such a step back in the fall of last year, noting that existing factories were unable to cope with his companies' growing demand for high-performance processors for artificial intelligence.
Details about the Terafab project itself are not yet disclosed. Musk previously mentioned that his companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, may require 100 to 200 billion AI chips per year. If such volumes cannot be met through existing manufacturing partners, the option of building their own factories was considered.
Musk has previously expressed ideas about changing the approach to cleanroom design in semiconductor manufacturing facilities. He proposed isolating not the entire building from the outside environment, but rather the silicon wafers themselves during processing. He believed this could simplify cleanroom requirements in the facility. He also noted that traditional factory construction timelines may not fit his planning horizons, but if third-party manufacturers can ramp up production to the required volumes within the required timeframe, the company is prepared to rely on external suppliers.
