Amazon will increase investments in AI startup Anthropic by $2.75 billion

Amazon, seeking to gain an edge in AI, is making its largest outside investment in its history. The tech giant plans to invest an additional $2.75 billion to support Anthropic, a San Francisco startup recognized as a leader in generative artificial intelligence.

Amazon's initial investment in Anthropic was $1.25 billion. The deal was made taking into account the startup's latest valuation, which reached $18.4 billion. As a result, Amazon will retain a minority stake in the company.

Last year, Anthropic successfully closed five funding deals totaling approximately $7.3 billion. The startup developed the core model and chatbot Claude, which became direct competitors to ChatGPT both in the corporate sphere and among ordinary users.

News of Amazon's investment comes just weeks after Anthropic unveiled Claude 3, its latest set of AI-powered models. The company said the most powerful of its new models outperformed GPT-4.

Amazon's move is the latest in a spending ranking among cloud providers aimed at gaining a lead in the artificial intelligence race. This is Anthropic's second capital structure update in a week. Earlier, FTX bankruptcy filings showed that the cryptocurrency exchange managed to conclude a deal to sell most of its stake in the AI startup.
