Microsoft will release "Xbox mode" for Windows 11 in April 2026
Microsoft has officially announced that Xbox Full Screen Experience will be coming to the stable version of Windows 11 this April. However, it will initially only be available in certain regions.
Microsoft has been trying to transform Windows PCs into gaming consoles for some time now. In November 2025, Windows Insider and Xbox Insider program members were given access to testing a new feature called Xbox Full Screen Experience in the Windows 11 beta. This mode allows games to run in full-screen, similar to Steam's Big Picture mode, but initial tester feedback was mixed.
According to company representatives, when the Xbox Full Screen Experience is enabled, the system launches Xbox apps in full-screen mode, but does not load the familiar Windows desktop. Furthermore, in this mode, the user will not be able to access File Explorer, and therefore the computer's file system. Microsoft also plans to automatically disable certain background processes. According to the company, this will free up up to 2 GB of RAM, which will positively impact PC performance and stability during gaming.
The new mode doesn't limit users to games from the Xbox ecosystem. The developers confirmed that Xbox FSE will be able to launch titles from the Microsoft Store, Steam, Battle.net, and other stores. The company promised to publish a full list of supported platforms later. However, this new feature has a peculiarity that may not appeal to everyone: the mode's interface is fully optimized for gamepad controls. For gamers accustomed to using a mouse and keyboard, navigation in this format may prove unfamiliar and inconvenient.
