Massive Dell data leak affected 49 million users

Dell has begun sending out notifications to its 49 million customers, informing them that an attacker has gained unauthorized access to their online portal. According to the emails, the leak affected data such as usernames, mailing addresses, information about ordered Dell equipment (service tags, product descriptions, order dates) and various warranty information.

Dell assures that, given the type of information compromised, there is no significant risk to customers. The company is investigating the incident, has notified the appropriate authorities and has engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to assess the damage.

According to the Daily Dark Web, on April 28, a hacker under the pseudonym Menelik online tried to sell the Dell database on the Breach Forums. The attacker claimed to have stolen information about 49 million customers who made purchases from Dell from 2017 to 2024.

Among the victims are 7 million individual customers, 11 million consumer segment companies, and the rest are partner enterprises or educational institutions. The majority of affected customers are located in the US, China, India, Australia and Canada.

The original post on the hacker forum was subsequently deleted, which may indicate that the database was sold to another attacker. Dell will have to thoroughly investigate the incident and take measures to prevent similar leaks in the future.
