Hackers use Midjourney brand to steal data

A report from cybersecurity company Bitdefender has uncovered a massive scam targeting artificial intelligence enthusiasts. The hackers used a fake Facebook page* disguised as a real Midjourney account, a well-known artificial intelligence tool.

The fake page has now attracted over a million Facebook followers*. According to Bitdefender, the attackers found a popular account, took over it and renamed it Midjourney. Despite the fact that the page advertised an artificial intelligence product, clicking on the download link activated a malicious program whose purpose was to steal confidential data.

The Bitdefender report details how the malware acted as an information stealer, a program to collect personal information from infected devices. Stolen information may include login credentials for online accounts, financial data, and even personal messages.

Midjourney is not the only artificial intelligence tool used by attackers. False accounts are also created under the brands Sora AI, DALL-E 3, Evoto and ChatGPT 5. To protect yourself from such attacks:

• Avoid clicking on download links from unreliable sources, including social media pages with large followings;
• If you are interested in a certain software, always visit the official website of the developer to download it;
• check the authenticity of the page as social platforms are full of fake accounts.

Therefore, before you click on a page that claims to represent a particular brand or service, make sure it is legitimate.

Also, be skeptical of software that promises unique features, especially if it is heavily promoted through unofficial channels. And having a strong antivirus package on your devices can help detect and block malware before it infects your system.
