Discord is introducing mandatory age verification for 18+ content
Discord is rolling out a major security update. Now, all users will be required to verify their age with a selfie or ID to access adult content.
Discord is announcing a major security update, primarily aimed at protecting underage users. Starting in March, all accounts will be configured by default to show age-appropriate content. To access age-restricted content, users will be required to verify their age.
The main changes will affect privacy settings and content filtering. Unverified users will be automatically blocked from age-restricted servers and channels, and potentially inappropriate content will be blurred. Direct messages and friend requests from strangers will be redirected to a separate folder.
Adult users will be able to lift these restrictions by completing one of two verification methods: a selfie, which verifies their age through the camera, or by uploading a government-issued ID. The company states that selfie data is processed locally on the device and is not transmitted, and uploaded documents are typically deleted by partners immediately after age verification. This process will be a one-time process for most users, but in some cases, additional steps may be required.
This isn't Discord's first initiative to strengthen security. The platform has previously banned teen dating channels and AI-generated content related to sexual violence, and also introduced filters and automated warnings.
Discord is also creating a Teen Council, consisting of 10-12 members aged 13 to 17. Its goal is to incorporate the opinions of young users into the development of safety policies and improvements to the platform.
The new rules will be rolled out gradually around the world in early March and will affect both new and existing users seeking access to adult content.
