ChatGPT is causing demand for entry-level workers to fall

Since ChatGPT launched, the number of new entry-level jobs in the UK has fallen by almost a third as companies aggressively deploy AI to streamline their workforce. Research by Adzuna found that the number of vacancies for graduates, apprentices and juniors without a degree has fallen by 32% since November 2022. Such roles now account for just 25% of the labour market, down from 28.9% two years ago.

Businesses are increasingly using AI to improve efficiency and cut costs. For example, BT CEO Allison Kirkby recently said that the development of AI could lead to further large-scale layoffs at the company, which had already planned to cut up to 55,000 jobs. Anthropic founder Dario Amodei has warned that AI could eliminate half of entry-level office jobs in the next five years and increase unemployment by 10-20%.

Competing service Indeed confirms the trend: college graduates are facing the worst job market since 2018, with job postings for them down 33% year-on-year in mid-June. Big companies like Klarna and IBM are already outsourcing significant tasks to AI, including customer service and HR functions.

The IMF estimates that 60% of jobs in developed countries are affected by AI, half of them negatively. However, the Tony Blair Institute believes that the technology could offset the job losses by creating new roles.

Experts from the consulting company PwC note that specialists with AI skills received 56% more in 2024 than their colleagues without such knowledge. At the same time, in professions most vulnerable to AI (for example, financial analysis), skill requirements change 66% faster than in less dependent areas (for example, physiotherapy), which complicates the adaptation of workers.
