Boston Dynamics introduced a new electric humanoid robot

Earlier this week, Boston Dynamics retired its famous hydraulically powered humanoid robot. Yesterday the company introduced its new Atlas robot , which runs on electricity.

Boston Dynamics introduced a new electric humanoid robot

Boston Dynamics has unveiled a new electric humanoid robot that not only mimics human movements, but also does so with improved flexibility.

The new Atlas robot is more compact and has an improved range of motion. Size and the ability to bend and maneuver are not cosmetic elements of a humanoid robot—they can open up new uses and possible operating conditions. The aesthetics of the updated Atlas are more in line with the designs of Agility's Digit and Apptronik's Apollo.

“We have created a set of special, powerful and highly flexible actuators for most joints. This is a huge range of motion. This tiny package truly packs the power of an elite athlete.”

Robert Plater, CEO of Boston Dynamics

The company has significantly reduced the weight of the humanoid robot by switching to an electric version. The torso with pump and network of hydraulic tubes has been replaced by a streamlined chassis with no exposed wiring. This allows the limbs to fully rotate and bend in ways that hydraulics do not allow. Thanks to its more flexible form, the electric Atlas is capable of movements that humans cannot.

The new Atlas isn't particularly sharp yet. This is not surprising, given that work on the humanoid robot is still ongoing. However, the company plans to begin testing an electric prototype at Hyundai plants early next year.

The final version of Atlas could be a few years away. This will be the company's third retail robot, following the four-legged Spot and the crate-lifting stretcher.
