Apple plans to upgrade its line of Mac computers with M4 chips. A processor designed for AI will have at least three variations:

  • initial Donan model;
  • powerful Brava model;
  • premium Hidra processor.

Donan will be used in the base MacBook Pro, the new MacBook Air and the budget version of the Mac mini. Brava chips will be installed in the premium version of the MacBook Pro and Mac mini. Mac Pro will be equipped with a Hidra processor. And Mac Studio - either an M3-era chip or an M4 Brava.

The M4 chips will be manufactured using the same 3nm technology as the M3 chips, but Apple supplier TSMC will likely use an improved version of the process to improve performance and power efficiency.

In addition, Apple plans to add a significantly improved neural engine with more cores for artificial intelligence tasks.

The company's move to use its own chips is part of a long-term initiative known as Apple Silicon, which began with the use of its own semiconductors in the iPad and iPhone 4 in 2010 and expanded to Mac computers in 2020.

The updated MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, Mac Pro and Mac Studio are expected to hit the market late this year or early next year.
