Apple Introduces New Monitors — Studio Display and Studio Display XDR
Apple announced a new generation of Mac monitors, expanding the line with the flagship Studio Display XDR. These devices feature improved displays, cameras with Center Stage technology, and Thunderbolt 5 ports.
According to the company's press release, the new generation Studio Display features an improved 12-megapixel Center Stage camera with a "Desk View" feature, allowing users to simultaneously view their desk. The monitor is equipped with a studio-quality three-microphone array and a six-speaker audio system with spatial audio support. The model uses a Thunderbolt 5 interface, providing high-speed data transfer and peripheral connectivity.
The headline new addition is the Studio Display XDR, positioned as the ultimate professional display. It features a 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display with mini-LED backlighting, providing over 2,000 zones of local dimming. Peak brightness is claimed to be 2,000 nits when viewing HDR content and 1,000 nits in standard mode. The display supports a 120Hz refresh rate and Adaptive Sync technology for smooth, fluid motion.
The Studio Display XDR features expanded color rendition with support for P3 and Adobe RGB gamuts, making it suitable for printing and design applications. Additionally, the model features new DICOM medical imaging presets and a calibrator designed for diagnostic radiology (following FDA clearance in the US).
Both models feature identical camera and audio systems, as well as Thunderbolt 5 ports that can charge a connected MacBook Pro (up to 96W for the Studio Display and up to 140W for the XDR version).
The Studio Display with a standard stand starts at $1,599, while the Studio Display XDR starts at $3,299. Pre-orders begin on March 4, with shipments beginning on March 11. The monitors will be available with standard or nano-texture glass and a variety of stand options, including VESA mounting.
