Sputniks to Launch 5G D2G Supported Satellites in 2026

In the summer of 2026, Sputnix, which will soon change its name to SICS, plans to launch two test satellites into orbit that support the new 5G D2C direct cellular communications standard. This standard, developed by the international partnership 3GPP, allows for communication directly to standard mobile phones without additional equipment. In essence, the satellites will act as flying base stations, providing seamless access to the network outside the coverage area of ​​​​ground towers.

The launch is planned to be carried out from the Chinese spaceport on Hainan Island using launch vehicles from CAS Space or Galactic Energy. A contract with one of the operators should be signed this winter. The choice of Chinese partners is due to the fact that the company's plans did not coincide with the launch schedule and proposals from Roscosmos.

Currently, two test vehicles are in the assembly and adjustment stage. Their testing is planned for autumn, after which pre-flight preparation will begin. The mass of each satellite is about 100 kg, and the dimensions are approximately 60x60x60 cm. The production is diversified and is carried out in cooperation with enterprises in Voronezh, Ryazan, St. Petersburg and Moscow, where the final assembly is carried out.

In parallel, the company has already begun developing larger satellites weighing about 1.5 tons, which should become the basis for a future serial constellation. The ultimate goal is to create a commercially in-demand satellite constellation to provide modern cellular communications services with global coverage.
