Japanese tech giants conduct 6G speed tests

Tests conducted by Japanese technology companies have shown that data transfer speeds of 100 Gbps could become the norm within a few years. This indicates the advent of the 6G wireless era.

Japanese tech giants conduct 6G speed tests

A consortium of Japanese tech giants including DOCOMO, NTT, NEC and Fujitsu have released the results of their real-world 6G speed tests.

The firms, which have been working together on the project since 2021, have demonstrated data transmission speeds of 100 Gbit/s in the 100 GHz and 300 GHz bands over distances of up to 100 meters. The achievement is exceptional as it is 20 times faster than the current maximum 5G data speed of 4.9 Gbps.

Each of the four companies brought specific expertise to the project:

  • DOCOMO has developed wireless equipment capable of handling enormous data rates;
  • NTT has created a sub-terahertz device capable of transmitting 100 Gbps per link;
  • NEC introduced the multi-element active phased array antenna;
  • Fujitsu demonstrated a high output power amplifier.

Despite the obstacles associated with higher frequencies in the sub-terahertz range, companies believe that high-throughput wireless communications are achievable. They also commit to continue joint research and development to set the standard for 6G telecommunications.

When 6G eventually goes mainstream, it is expected to support various applications such as ultra-HD video streaming and real-time control of autonomous vehicles. Technology like this could lead to 100Gbps data speeds becoming the new norm.
