IOC unveils AI program for 2024 Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has unveiled an artificial intelligence program for the 2024 Olympic Games, which aims to be the most technologically advanced event in history.

“Today we take another step towards ensuring the uniqueness of the Olympic Games and the relevance of sport - and to do this we must be leaders of change, not the object of change. With the ever-accelerating development of digital technologies, and in particular artificial intelligence, we are again at a crossroads.”

Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee

The IOC, in collaboration with the sports community, will focus on the power of AI to support athletes. Intel will play an important role in this process.

Using AI applications developed on Intel Gaudi accelerators and running on Xeon processors, including the Intel OpenVINO AI platform, fans can learn how technology can help athletes reach new heights.

Intel will also help preserve and enhance the legacy of the Olympic Games by transforming archived video into 3D digital artifacts that can be accessed at the Olympic Museum. Thanks to a solution developed by Intel's AI Lab, the video will be transformed using neural cloning to provide fans with a new hands-on experience.

Intel equipment will also play a key role in the IOC's translational efforts. Xeon-based broadcast servers will encode and compress live TV signals using 8K/60FPS/HDR technology. This signal will then be distributed around the world, providing a high-quality live broadcast.

The AI roadmap is a unique approach to understanding the next Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris in 2024. Despite the possible risks, the IOC is committed to maximizing the potential of AI.
