Microsoft has denied reports of rewriting Windows in Rust.
A number of media outlets and social media users have claimed that Microsoft intends to completely abandon the C and C++ programming languages and, using artificial intelligence, rewrite Windows in the Rust language by 2030.
The announcement was prompted by a post by Microsoft lead engineer Galen Hunt, which was related to a search for a specialist. The post outlined an ambitious research goal: to eventually eliminate C and C++ code from the company's largest projects, migrating them to the more secure Rust language. To achieve this, a combination of algorithms and high-performance AI agents was proposed.
However, Microsoft issued an official clarification refuting the conclusions drawn from this information. A statement issued on December 24, 2025, emphasized that this was a purely internal research project. Its purpose was to develop tools and infrastructure for code analysis and potentially simplify migration between programming languages.
Hunt also clarified that his comments about Windows do not constitute a finalized strategy or a real plan to completely rewrite Windows 11, future versions of the operating system, or other products. The company views Rust as a promising language for improving security and is already gradually implementing it in certain components, such as Windows 11 drivers. However, there are no plans to completely abandon the decades-old C and C++ languages in the foreseeable future.
