Discord will start showing ads through sponsored quests

Discord has announced that starting next week it will be running ads through sponsored quests from video game makers. They will be shown to users according to their gaming preferences, age and location. Advertising banners will be placed in the lower left corner of the screen.

To receive a reward for completing a quest, users will have to broadcast themselves by completing tasks from advertisers. At the same time, at least one friend should observe the process.

This decision for Discord is an important one that, while potentially increasing revenue, could impact user loyalty. CEO Jason Citron previously said that Discord would not use advertising to make money.

Opinions about the innovation vary. Some consider advertising quite sensitive and understand its necessity on a free platform. Others worry that quests will cause people to put pressure on their friends. Discord clarified that users will be able to disable advertising in the settings.
