China Launches Ultra-Fast 10G Network

China successfully launched the world's first commercial 10G broadband network based on 50G PON technology. The peak download speed reached a record 9834 Mbps, 10 times faster than a regular gigabit connection, allowing users to download 8K movies in seconds.

China Launches Ultra-Fast 10G Network

Huawei and China Unicom have successfully deployed the first 10G broadband network based on innovative 50G PON technology. By upgrading the fiber optic infrastructure, the throughput for users has increased to 10 gigabits, and the latency has been reduced to the millisecond level. Tests have shown impressive results: the download speed is 9834 Mbps, the upload speed is 1008 Mbps, and the ping is stably kept at 3 ms, which is several times higher than the current home Internet standards.

This technological breakthrough paves the way for the introduction of resource-intensive services, including 8K video, 10G cloud storage, VR/AR, and cloud gaming. Users have already appreciated the benefits: 4K movies now take seconds to download, and the simultaneous operation of dozens of smart devices — from 8K streaming to cloud gaming — is lag-free.

"Previously, downloading a 4K movie took several minutes. Now, it takes a few seconds. What's even more amazing is that even with multiple smart devices running at home, the network functions without any issues, and 8K video playback on demand, 4K video surveillance, and super-fast cloud eSports gaming all worked reliably," said one of the first users.

As of early 2025, China had 4.25 million 5G base stations in operation, more than any other country.
